The books that appear in these annotated book lists were evaluated and selected by a Book Review Committee appointed by National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC). NCSS and CBC have cooperated on this annual bibliography since 1972. Books selected for this bibliography are written primarily for children in grades K-8. Shannon Pugh, manager of academics and assessments for Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Annapolis, Maryland, has been elected Vice-President. An educator for 25 years, Shannon began teaching in rural Mississippi where she taught social studies and science and then moved to Dallas, Texas where she taught AP World History, AP Art History, and AP European History, as well as Sheltered (ESOL) World Geography.
