Shannon Pugh, manager of academics and assessments for Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Annapolis, Maryland, has been elected Vice-President. An educator for 25 years, Shannon began teaching in rural Mississippi where she taught social studies and science and then moved to Dallas, Texas where she taught AP World History, AP Art History, and AP European History, as well as Sheltered (ESOL) World Geography. While in Dallas, she was a member of the Texas Council for the Social Studies and served as Secretary and President of the Dallas Council. She also became one of the first three social studies teachers in Texas to earn National Board Certification. She continues to teach high school social studies courses in alternative education settings, and she is an adjunct faculty member at McDaniel College where she teaches courses in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Shannon is a two-term member of the NCSS Board of Directors, and also serves on the Maryland Council for the Social Studies Board of Directors. She holds an Ed.D. from the University of Maryland.

Shannon begins her term as Vice-President on July 1, 2020 and is in line to become President on July 1, 2022.

NCSS membership also elected the following candidates to three-year terms on the NCSS Board of Directors:

• Alex Cuenca, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (College/University representative);
• Kristin Ayala, Social Studies Teacher at Fox Ridge Middle School in Aurora, Colorado (Middle Level Classroom Teacher representative);
• Tina Ellsworth, K-12 Social Studies Coordinator for Olathe Public Schools in Olathe, Kansas (At-Large representative);
• Rhonda Watton, Social Studies Teacher at Templeton Middle School in Sussex, Wisconsin (K-12 Classroom Teacher At-Large representative)

Board and Officer terms will begin July 1. Also in July 2020, President-Elect Stefanie Wager, social studies consultant for the Iowa Department of Education in Des Moines, Iowa, will assume the office of President, and Vice-President Anton Schulzki, social studies teacher at General William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, will assume the office of President-Elect.
