This session will explore the current state of education for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) teachers and students locally and across the nation. Activities and discussions will center on current research and the impact of the marginalization of LGBTQ content in day-to-day instruction. Attendees will walk away with resources that can be used to facilitate LGBTQ content and help better support their LGBTQ students.

Presenter:

Zachariah Lowe, MEd, NBCT is the Curriculum Coach at PreK-8th grade R.E. Davis College Preparatory Academy in Sumter School District. He is a former school and district teacher of the year, and was named a top-five finalist for 2019 State Teacher of the Year. Lowe graduated from The University of Akron with a BA in Social Studies Education and from The University of South Carolina with an MEd in Educational Administration. He is a current PhD student at Tiffin University, studying Global Leadership and Change. His students have been recognized at the national level for awards such as the National WWII Museum’s Billy Michal Student Leadership Award and the NASC/Ruth Hollander Award for outstanding contributions to participation in democracy. Mr. Lowe himself has served as a C-SPAN Teacher Fellow, has attended fellowships at institutions including Ford’s Theatre, Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, and the United States Supreme Court, and has presented at numerous workshops and conferences. In addition, he has authored a chapter for a published book (“Inquiry-Based Global Learning in the K–12 Social Studies Classroom,” Routledge). Within the local community, Mr. Lowe was named a "Top 20 Professional Under 40" and the 2019 Chamber of Commerce's Young Professional of Sumter.
