National Council for the Social Studies presents its first virtual Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). Come engage and learn from social studies leaders and educators across the country. SLI 2020 aims to help you develop an advocacy plan on the grassroots and national level and help influence the future of social studies education. You will be empowered to advocate for social studies and create transformational change for the profession and within your own district, affiliated council, organization or community.

Who Should Attend

  • Leaders of NCSS Affiliated Councils (Presidents, Executive Directors, and Legislative Liaisons strongly encouraged).
  • Leaders of NCSS Associated Groups (CS4, CUFA, IA, and NSSSA), Operations Committees, and Special Interest Communities.
  • Any NCSS member who is passionate about social studies advocacy.

The mission of NCSS is to advocate and build capacity for high-quality social studies by providing leadership, services, and support to educators. This event is open to all NCSS members with a common interest in social studies, leadership, and examining social studies education in developing informed civic engagement.

  • Create an advocacy plan for your own organization based on focus areas.

Lead Facilitators

Stefanie Wager

President, National Council for the Social Studies, 2020-2021
Social Studies Consultant, Iowa Department of Education, Des Moines, IA

Stefanie Wager is the Social Studies Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education, providing leadership and guidance at the state level for social studies education. She received both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Drake University in Des Moines, IA and taught high school social studies for Des Moines Public Schools, Dallas Center-Grimes Schools, as well as worked at Instituto Thomas Jefferson in Naucalpan, Mexico. She formerly served as the coordinator of a Teaching American History Grant and was named an Emerging Leader in Education by ASCD in 2011. Stefanie has been involved in the Iowa Council for the Social Studies since 2010, first serving as co-chair for the Annual Conference, then Vice-President, and now President. A member of NCSS and its' associated group, Council of State Social Studies Specialists (CS4), she has worked on the NCSS Strategic Plan Committee, Executive Director Search Committee, and the Associated Group Ad-Hoc Committee, among others. Stefanie currently serves on the NCSS Board of Directors as the incoming president 2020-2021.

Joe Schmidt

Social Studies Specialist, Maine Department Of Education, Augusta, ME

Joe is the Social Studies Specialist for the Maine Department of Education following nine years as a social studies teacher in rural Wisconsin schools and three years as the K-12 Social Studies Teacher Leader for Madison Metropolitan School District in Madison, Wisconsin. He serves as a member of the National iCivics Educator Network and recently completed four years on the Teaching Tolerance Advisory Board. Leadership roles for NCSS including chairperson of the Government and Public Relations Committee and former chair of the select subcommittee for the Social Education journal. Joe is a member of the NCSS Task Force on Inquiry-Based Social Studies Education and serves as a co-chair of the NCSS Advocacy Task Force. Outside of NCSS, he serves on the Geography Teacher Editorial Board and the ThinkerAnalytix Advisory Board. Currently, Joe is leading professional development related to teaching about Maine Native Americans and personal finance related to the recently revised social studies standards in Maine. He provides support throughout Maine while presenting at numerous state and national conferences annually.

Janis Adams Kyser

Director, Tennessee Center for Civic Learning and Engagement; and 
Executive Director, Sequatchie County – Dunlap Chamber of Commerce, Dunlap, TN

Janis serves as the director for the Tennessee Center for Civic Learning and Engagement providing professional development opportunities and resources for educators. Janis has a long career in education having taught for 41 years bringing service-learning and civic education opportunities to students from K-16. She serves as Tennessee’s liaison for numerous Civic Organizations and works closely with the Tennessee and the National Council for Social Studies in her role as Chair of the Civic Engagement Community. Currently, Janis serves as the Executive Director of the Sequatchie County – Dunlap Chamber of Commerce.
