NCSS First-Timer Scholarships

104th NCSS Annual Conference • November 22-24, 2024

NCSS First-Timer Scholarships

Attending the NCSS Annual Conference helps social studies educators share innovative ideas, discuss the best teaching methods, and network with colleagues to create lifelong professional connections. Yet, many educators do not have district support to attend.

National Council for the Social Studies is pleased to offer a limited number of registration scholarships to enable early and mid-career educators, from diverse ethnic groups, especially historically marginalized communities and/or those who teach in economically disadvantaged school districts to attend the Annual Conference. Teachers from across the United States and its territories are welcome to apply.

What does a Conference Registration Scholarship include?

The scholarship covers the registration fee for the 104th NCSS Annual Conference in Boston, MA (November 22-24, 2024), and a one-year regular membership in NCSS. Hotel and travel are not included as part of the scholarship.

Who may apply for a Conference Registration Scholarship?

The intent of the scholarship is to enable early and mid-career educators, from diverse ethnic groups, especially historically marginalized communities and/or those who teach in economically disadvantaged school districts to take advantage of this premier professional development opportunity.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • first-time attendee at an NCSS Annual Conference.
  • full-time preK-12 social studies school teacher.

Priority will be given to applicants who

  • have a diverse background and/or experience
  • are in their first five (5) years of teaching
  • teach in a high-poverty school district.

If your district has committed to fund your registration, please do not apply for a First-Timer Scholarship.

If you are not sure whether your school meets any one of these criteria, consult your principal or district office for clarification.

How do I apply?

  1. Once you have received permission from your principal or administrator to attend the 100th Anniversary Celebration, simply fill out the online NCSS First-Timer Scholarship Form below.
  2. Tell us in detail how attending the NCSS Annual Conference will support your teaching and benefit your students. This is a competitive application, so please focus on the scholarship criteria.
  3. Attach a current resume as a Word Document or PDF to the online form where indicated.
  4. Hit the submit button and you are done.

What is the deadline for application?

The deadline is August 30, 2024.  We encourage you to apply early. However, if your district is planning to fund your registration, please do NOT apply for a First-Timer Scholarship. NCSS will not refund registrations that have been pre-paid.

When will I find out if I received a scholarship?

If you are awarded a scholarship, you will receive an email from NCSS with registration and log-in information for the conference. NCSS will not refund registration already paid by you or by your district if you receive a scholarship. The scholarship is intended for those teachers who do NOT have financial support for the registration.
