Eligibility
For all categories, a candidate must meet the eligibility requirements at the time of the election. You must be a member of NCSS in order to be eligible to be a candidate for an NCSS board or officer position.
When reviewing applications, the committee will consider evidence of continued advocacy and support for social studies, and applicants' record of involvement and initiative in:
- NCSS or affiliates' committees and/or activities;
- State council(s) and, where appropriate, local and regional activities; and
- Other activities designed to promote and improve the quality of social studies education.
President-Elect/Vice-President
Candidates must have completed a full elected term, or 2 years of an appointed term, on the Board of Directors before assuming office.
Elementary Classroom Teacher, Secondary Classroom Teacher, and K-12 At-Large Classroom Teacher
For purposes of nomination, elementary and secondary teachers are to be defined as persons actually teaching half-time or more in the classroom.
At-Large
This category is open to department chairpersons, holders of administrative, supervisory, and project positions, or other professionals with a history of affiliation and support for NCSS.
Note: NCSS college student members preparing to fill any of these professional roles shall be eligible for nomination and election in any of these categories.
Members of the NCSS Board of Directors serve a term of three (3) years. Individual elected vice president serve a total of four (4) years: one year each as Vice-President, President-Elect, President, and Past-President.

The 2024 election will be held from November 25, 2024-January 15, 2025. The candidates elected will begin their terms on July 1, 2025.
All nomination applications are due by April 15, 2024.
