Call for Expertise: Position Statement Revisions

Call for Expertise: Position Statement Revisions

NCSSis calling all members to apply for one of two new task forces forming to update position statements.

Powerful, Purposeful Pedagogy in Elementary Social Studies

This task force will review the current position statement, Powerful, Purposeful Pedagogy in Elementary Social Studies, approved by the Board of Directors in 2017. The task force will recommend whether to update, completely re-write, or keep this statement as presented. This position statement has been an important part of NCSS’ advocacy initiatives in recent years. Members with experience and/or current assignments in elementary social studies classrooms, methods instruction, research, curriculum development, supervision, or policy are encouraged to apply.

Social Studies in the Middle Schools

This task force will develop a new position statement on Social Studies in the Middle Schools. A former position statement on this topic was archived and the Board of Directors would like a full new vision created for adoption and use by NCSS in its continued advocacy efforts. Members with experience and/or current assignments in middle school social studies classrooms, methods instruction, research, curriculum development, supervision, or policy are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

Please consider applying for one the task forces above. Please consider the following criteria in nominating yourself or others:

  1. Any task force member must be a current member of NCSS.
  2. NCSS welcomes a diversity in backgrounds, experiences, years of education experience, and geographic locations. NCSS seeks to raise the voices of all social studies professionals in an organization whose culture is inclusive and where all voices are encouraged, supported and celebrated.
  3. Task force work takes commitment. Each task force will be requested to meet at specific times online as determined by the appointed chair. Please make sure the individuals you are recommending understand the time commitment.

NCSS Task Forces are appointed by the NCSS President, in consultation with the Board of Directors. A member of the Board will serve as liaison or as a member of the Task Force.
