Oregon students created a video about Minoru Yasui, a leader of the redress movement for Americans who suffered internment, 1942–44. Their hope, a Presidential Medal of Freedom for Yasui, was fulfilled. Iowa’s lessons on voting and elections are recognized.

2017 NCSS Annual Conference
Former U.S. Treasurer Rosa Rios will address the Conference in San Francisco, November 17–19. Rios led the public-engagement process that placed a woman (Harriet Tubman) on U.S. currency. Check out Rios’s “Teachers Righting History” project.
Awards, Grants, and Contests
Honor a colleague: nominate excellent social studies educators and researchers for an NCSS award by May 15. And check out other opportunities. Invite students to showcase their work. Read about NCSS grants to enhance your classroom or boost a project. 

The Summer Legislative Institute, as well as the C3 Teachers Inquiry Design Model Summer Institute, happen in July. The NCSS Annual Conference and its state and regional affiliate meetings are all listed here as well.

Teaching Resources
Read about classroom resources and online offerings from many sources. For example, the 9/11 Memorial Museum invites teachers and students to participate in Anniversary in the Schools, a free webinar commemorating the 16th anniversary of the attacks of 9/11/2001.
TV Plus
Get a head’s up on television programs that focus on history, civics, geography, economics, and/or current issues. Many are accompanied by educational websites or video shorts that can be used in the classroom.
