Why Does America Go to War? (FPRI)

Foreign Policy Research Institutes' (FPRI’s) professional development opportunities for high school history and social science teachers include a History Institute on “Why Does America Go to War?” on March 25-26, 2017. Learn about it at http://www.fpri.org/education/history-institute
For each History Institute, 40-45 teachers are selected to attend a weekend-long professional development conference that includes eight lectures from top scholars, practitioners, or journalists who are known not only for their scholarship and depth but also for their ability to communicate to non-specialists. Benefits include complimentary overnight accommodations for those outside of the Chicago vicinity (Friday and Saturday nights, as needed). The conference also includes free room and board, partial travel reimbursement, and, in exchange for lesson plans designed around the History Institute, teachers are offered stipends. Participants receive a certificate of instruction for use in professional development records and Carthage College offers graduate credit for participation in the conference for a nominal fee.
Since 1996, FPRI’s Butcher History Institutes have fostered civic and international literacy through a series of weekend-long conferences for teachers. Two to three such weekends are held each year focusing on a wide range of topics in U.S. and world history. Over the years, more than 1,000 teachers from over 800 schools have participated in these programs (a full list of participating schools can be found here). Recently, FPRI has also begun to offer week-long study trips, which send teachers abroad for cultural immersion programs in a foreign country.
